UC Merced’s First Annual Student Drag Show was the place to be at February 16th, to experience an evening of entertainment, music, dancing, and LGBTQ pride. Attending this event provided pure entertainment, and a way to show support for those who are still being marginalized in society today. Hopefully, this first student Drag Show, and the ones beyond, will show the greater importance and necessity of diversity, and the positive vibes and mindsets that were in that room that day can be expanded by everyone in their daily lives.
This show was hosted by the UC Merced LGBTQ+ Initiatives, and the Lambda Alliance at UC Merced. The doors to COB 102 opened at 5:45pm, and had music playing and a lighted stage until the show began promptly at 6:30pm. The show lasted for about two hours on February 16th, 2019. This show consisted of two hosts, three drag queens, and two drag kings. There were also a few costume changes among the performers, and one short intermission that allowed for a more thorough makeover.
The drag queens’ names were Precious, Marriara, and Jianna. The drag kings’ names were Moonlight Madness and Young Clit, often referred to by a host as Little Clit. Moonlight Madness performed a rocking solo to “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers, and one to “Closer” by The Chainsmokers. Jianna gave an energetic solo performance with her short, glittery dress. Precious also performed a few solos with her extravagant costumes, including one to Ariana Grande’s song “Into You.”
The hottest performances were by the pair Young Clit and Marriara, who incorporated short skits into their acts. One piece had the queen holding a whip to represent BDSM, and the king on all fours being lightly whipped around with the whip. Both the queen and king were moving and being touched sexually with pieces of their outer clothing slowly removed. Additionally, to make the show even more exciting, the performers came down to the audience and showed their groove right next to or on top of the willing audience members.
The hosts also provided the audience members an opportunity to come onto the stage and strut their moves. One individual, who said that he has done some drag in the past, gave a short demonstration and was hesitantly followed by three more participants. This male displayed a very good improvisation act. Finally, the two girls strutted to the front of the stage together, followed by a kiss on the cheek by one to another. The host artfully expressed that these two seemed to be more than friends, but was informed by one of the girls that they are sisters, which uneventfully lead her to say that “this has now become awkward.”
For the second stage of the show, all five performers came out and did some improvisation while showing off their moves. At the end of the night, there was one queen and one king declared the winners of the show. These winners were determined by who the audience would applaud and cheer the loudest for. These two winners will then have the opportunity to perform at the annual Fabulosity Drag Show during UC Merced’s Pride Week.
So, without further ado, the Drag Queen who will be performing at Fabulosity is Precious, and the Drag King is Young Clit! The date and place to mark on calendars for the Fabulosity Drag Show is April 6th in COB 102!
For those curious about exploring the LGBTQ culture and supporting the community, there are the Lamda Alliance General Meetings in COB 110 every Wednesdays from 5:30pm-7pm. Lambda Alliance is the organization that hosts Pride Week and attending meetings is a great way to have involvement in the student LGBTQ community.
